Capital One to British Airways Avios 20% Transfer Bonus: Take It for a Seat, Not a Stash (October 2026)

1,000 Capital One miles become 1,200 Avios through October 31 — then move them to the program that prices the award

Capital One is offering a 20% bonus to British Airways Club Avios through October 31, 2026. Here's the 1,000-to-1,200 math, why BA metal surcharges can erase it, and when to Move Avios to Iberia or Qatar instead.
Capital One to British Airways Avios 20% Transfer Bonus: Take It for a Seat, Not a Stash (October 2026)

Last updated: October 1, 2026

Capital One is paying a 20% bonus on transfers to British Airways Club through October 31, 2026. The usual 1:1 becomes 1,000 Capital One miles to 1,200 Avios. The bonus is hard-coded into the ratio on Capital One’s side, it posts with the transfer, there is nothing to register, and there is no cap.

That is as good as Capital One usually gets on this corridor. It is the typical annual level, about 20%, and it is still the wrong moment to empty a Venture balance “because 20%.” Avios are a one-way door. Take the bonus when you can already see the award and you have priced the taxes and the carrier surcharge. Transfer into British Airways, then Move Avios to the program that prices the seat. Skip the speculative pile.

Before you move miles: Plug your spending into the credit card optimizer so you know whether Capital One miles are the currency you should be earning. A transfer bonus does not fix a wallet that should be on a different card.

The promo, without the fluff

This offer lives on the Capital One transfer screen. You should see 1,200 Avios per 1,000 Capital One miles before you confirm. A screen that still shows 1:1 is a screen where this bonus is not on the transfer you are about to make. Do not send the miles and hope the extra 20% appears later. That is how a different kind of promo works. It is not how this one works.

Bonus ratio 1,000 Capital One miles → 1,200 Avios
How it posts Built into the ratio. The bonus arrives with the transfer
How many times Unlimited. No cap called out
Registration None
Minimum 1,000 Capital One miles, then steps of 100
Speed Capital One → British Airways is generally instant
Direction One-way. British Airways will not send them back

The name on the Capital One account has to match the name on the British Airways Club account. Confirm the cutoff on your own transfer screen if you are moving miles on the last evening. A date that still says October 31 is the one that matters for your account. If a transfer hangs, wait until it resolves. A second click is a second transfer.

Partner transfers are for the miles cards. That set includes Venture, Venture X, VentureOne (including VentureOne for Good Credit), and the business miles cards: Venture X Business, Venture Business, and VentureOne Business. If your business card still says Spark Miles, treat it as the same miles currency and confirm the transfer tool is actually on the account. A cash-back card does not send miles to British Airways by itself.

Before and after: 1,000 miles become 1,200 Avios

The bonus is 20% more Avios, which means the same award costs about 16.7% fewer Capital One miles. One divided by 1.2 is roughly 0.833. You are not getting a new currency. You are getting a cheaper on-ramp into one you already had.

Capital One miles transferred Avios at 1:1 Avios with the 20% bonus Extra Avios
10,000 10,000 12,000 2,000
20,000 20,000 24,000 4,000
25,000 25,000 30,000 5,000
50,000 50,000 60,000 10,000
75,000 75,000 90,000 15,000
100,000 100,000 120,000 20,000

Those rows are receipts. They are not a shopping list. A 100,000-mile Capital One balance is a serious stash: several partner awards, or a lot of paid travel wiped out at a penny a mile. At this ratio it becomes 120,000 Avios, which can be a remarkable redemption or an expensive souvenir, depending entirely on the seat and the cash you still owe.

Capital One’s published minimum is 1,000 miles. Above that, the transfer tool moves in 100-mile steps, which is more precise than the 1,000-point chunks Chase and Amex force on you. Use it. Divide the Avios the award requires by 1.2, round up to the next 100 miles, and stop.

Avios the award requires Capital One miles to transfer Avios you actually receive
12,000 10,000 12,000
20,000 16,700 20,040
30,000 25,000 30,000
40,000 33,400 40,080
50,000 41,700 50,040
60,000 50,000 60,000
80,000 66,700 80,040
100,000 83,400 100,080

Fifty thousand Avios is the row worth memorizing, because it does not divide cleanly. You transfer 41,700 Capital One miles and you receive 50,040 Avios. The 40 leftover miles are the right kind of leftover. Transferring 100,000 on October 30 because the calendar is about to flip is the expensive kind.

Check the amount the tool will actually send before you confirm. If your screen will not accept a 100-mile step, round up to the next amount it will take and still send only what the booking needs.

British Airways metal can spend the bonus before you sit down

Avios on a British Airways flight are not a clean miles-only ticket. Long-haul business and first on BA metal routinely add a carrier-imposed surcharge — the line people still call a fuel surcharge — on top of government taxes. The 20% bonus does not touch that cash. It only shrinks the mileage.

A few hundred dollars of surcharge, sometimes more, is common on long-haul BA awards, and trips that touch London are where the number gets ugly. Price the award in cash and in Avios, on the same flight, before you transfer. If the cash you still pay is close to a changeable revenue fare, the miles are decorating a ticket you should have bought. The bonus made the decoration 20% cheaper. It did not make the ticket a deal.

This is the failure mode of the promo. Someone screenshots 1,200 Avios, transfers a six-figure balance into British Airways Club, and then discovers the business-class seat they wanted is 60,000 Avios plus a surcharge that ate the value of the 20%. The ratio worked. The redemption did not.

Short-haul is a different product. A distance-based Avios price on a short flight can still be a good use when the cash fare is ugly and the surcharge is a rounding error. The old Alaska and American short-haul bargains that made Avios famous have been devalued, so do not transfer against a blog post from 2019. Search the flight. Read the cash line. Then decide.

Transfer into BA, then Move Avios to the program that prices the seat

British Airways Club is the on-ramp. It is not always the checkout. Avios move between British Airways Club, Iberia Club, Aer Lingus AerClub, Finnair Plus, and Qatar Airways Privilege Club. The move is generally 1:1, and the established paths are free. Book in the program whose award chart, and whose surcharge, is kinder for the seat you actually want.

Capital One does not hand you that choice directly. On Capital One’s published partner list, British Airways, Finnair Plus, and Qatar Privilege Club are the Avios-family programs you can transfer into. Iberia and Aer Lingus are not on that list. You reach them by transferring to British Airways and then moving the Avios. Finnair and Qatar are on the list at the ordinary ratio, which means a direct transfer to either one does not get this 20%. The bonus is on the British Airways transfer. The way the 20% reaches Qatar or Finnair is: Capital One → British Airways at 1,000:1,200, then Move Avios onward.

That only works if the move works on your accounts. Iberia in particular has historically refused inbound Avios until the account is old enough and has some activity. Confirm the move on the accounts you already hold before you send Capital One miles you cannot reverse. Opening a fresh Iberia account on the night you want to fly is how people get stuck with a British Airways balance and a seat they can see only in Iberia.

Three comparisons are worth running every time, and none of them is a price you should memorize:

  • Iberia, US–Europe. Iberia’s own chart for flights it operates, especially between the US and Madrid, is the first comparison. Both the Avios price and the cash co-pay are often kinder than British Airways metal on the same ocean. Price the live award. A number you remember from a previous chart is not a booking.
  • Qatar, and Cathay booked with Qatar Avios. Qatar business class is one of the better products in the sky, and a lot of the space Qatar releases is easiest to see with Privilege Club Avios. Cathay Pacific flights priced with Qatar Avios are the other sweet spot people mean when they say “Avios.” That is a different product from transferring Capital One miles straight into Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, which Capital One also offers, at 1:1, with no bonus. Compare both prices on the seat you want.
  • Short-haul where the cash fare is the insult. Aer Lingus, a short British Airways or Iberia hop, or a distance-band partner award with a small surcharge. The 20% matters more here as a way to finish a small balance than as a reason to build one.

If the Move to Qatar is what makes the award work, the direct Capital One → Qatar transfer at 1:1 is the fallback, and it is a worse ratio. Use it only when you have already confirmed the BA move will not go through and you would have booked the seat anyway. Do not “diversify” by sending half the miles to BA and half straight to Qatar. One booking, one path, the one with the bonus if the move is real.

Venture X is how many of these miles got earned. It is not the decision.

A lot of the Capital One miles aimed at this promo were earned on a Venture or a Venture X: 2x on everyday spend, with higher rates when the purchase runs through Capital One Travel. In our card data the Venture X is a $395 card with a $300 Capital One Travel credit. That is context for the currency. It is not a review, and it is not a reason to open a card because a transfer bonus lasts thirty-one days.

Whether Venture X belongs in the wallet is a spending question. We already compared it with the Bilt Palladium in Bilt Palladium vs Capital One Venture X. Run your own numbers in the optimizer. A 20% bonus on miles you earn slowly loses to a plain transfer of a currency you earn every month into a partner you actually book.

The floor on the miles you already hold is simpler than a card application. Wiping out a travel purchase is often worth about a penny per Capital One mile. Ten thousand miles are about $100 of travel you no longer pay for. The 12,000 Avios those miles become have to save you more than $100 after the taxes and the surcharge, or the transfer lost to the easiest redemption in the account. A strong partner redemption is worth more than a penny — a reasonable planning band for Capital One miles used well is about 1.7¢ to 1.85¢ — and the Avios seat has to clear that too before this bonus is a great use rather than an acceptable one. The seat decides. The percentage does not.

When to transfer

Move Capital One miles only when all five of these are true:

  1. The seat is on the calendar. A specific flight, cabin, and date, in the program that will issue the ticket. “We fly to Europe next year” is not a booking. An Avios balance does not hold a business-class seat.
  2. You have priced the cash. Taxes and the carrier surcharge are on the screen, and you would still take the award after paying them. Miles do not cover that line.
  3. You picked the program on purpose. You compared British Airways metal with the Iberia, Qatar, Aer Lingus, or Finnair price for the same trip, and you are transferring into the path that wins. If that path depends on a Move, you have already confirmed the Move works.
  4. The amount is the amount the award needs. Use the table. Round up to the next 100 miles. Send the miles to the British Airways account that will either book or move them.
  5. These miles are spare. You are not raiding a balance you need for a different Capital One partner, another traveler, or a signup bonus that is still posting.

The clean version of a yes: the seat is visible, the surcharge is a number you can say out loud without wincing, and 41,700 Capital One miles (or whatever the award actually requires) finishes it. Transfer. Book. Stop.

When to leave the miles at Capital One

Leave the balance alone if any of these are true:

  • Nothing is on the calendar. The expensive version of this promo is moving 100,000 miles on October 31 because the banner is red, then refreshing an empty Avios search for six months.
  • The only seat you like is BA metal with a brutal surcharge. The 20% made the mileage cheaper and left the cash alone. Pay cash, or book the partner whose surcharge is sane.
  • The Move is a theory. You need Iberia or Qatar or Finnair, and you have not watched 1,000 Avios actually arrive in that account. Test the path with a trivial amount, or book where the miles already sit.
  • Another currency is the one you can spare. Chase, Amex, and Citi can all reach Avios programs on their own schedules. This 20% does not ride along. A plain 1:1 transfer from a different bank is a worse ratio than this bonus, and it can still be the right transfer if that bank is the surplus balance.
  • You are collecting bonuses instead of seats. October is loud. Amex is running its own airline promo, a 25% bonus to Flying Blue through the same October 31 date, which we covered in the Amex Flying Blue transfer bonus. That 25% applies to Membership Rewards. It does not apply to Capital One miles, and this 20% does not apply to Amex. Move the currency the offer is actually attached to, toward a seat you can already see.

Chase ran a 30% bonus to Avios last month. That was Chase, and it is over. A bigger number from a different issuer does not make Capital One’s 20% a bad Capital One deal, and it does not make a speculative Capital One transfer smart. Twenty percent is the level Capital One usually offers here. Amex published a 30% British Airways Avios bonus in August 2026. That window is closed too. The live Capital One ratio is the one on your transfer screen tonight.

The verdict

Take the October 2026 Capital One to British Airways bonus when the award is already on the screen and the cash co-pay is a number you accept.

Remember the ratio, because it is the whole promo: 1,000 Capital One miles become 1,200 Avios, the bonus is in the ratio, it posts with the transfer, there is no registration, and there is no cap. The window closes October 31, 2026. Transfers are generally instant, one-way, and available on the miles cards — Venture, Venture X, VentureOne, and the business miles cards, including the plastic a lot of people still call Spark Miles. The minimum is 1,000 miles, then 100-mile steps. For 50,000 Avios you transfer 41,700 Capital One miles.

Then leave British Airways if British Airways is the wrong place to book. Move the Avios to Iberia, Aer Lingus, Finnair, or Qatar when that program prices the seat and the surcharge. A direct Capital One transfer to Qatar or Finnair skips the bonus. BA metal on a long-haul award can spend the 20% in carrier charges before you board. The old short-haul sweet spots are not a reason to pre-fund an account.

Do not transfer speculatively. Do not transfer because Chase’s 30% was bigger. Do not transfer Amex or Chase miles expecting this ratio to appear. Find the seat. Price the taxes and the surcharge. Confirm the Move if you need one. Then send exactly the Capital One miles that ticket requires.

This article reflects the Capital One miles to British Airways Club transfer bonus published for October 1–31, 2026: a 20% bonus on Capital One’s side, hard-coded into the ratio so 1,000 Capital One miles become 1,200 Avios, with no registration and no stated cap. Capital One’s published rules require at least 1,000 miles, a name that matches the loyalty account, and a one-way transfer. The 100-mile step above that minimum is how Capital One’s transfer tool has worked. Eligible miles cards include Venture, Venture X, VentureOne, VentureOne for Good Credit, Venture X Business, Venture Business, and VentureOne Business. Capital One’s published airline list also includes Finnair Plus and Qatar Airways Privilege Club at the standard ratio, without this bonus; Iberia Club and Aer Lingus AerClub are reached by moving Avios after a British Airways transfer. Avios moves between British Airways Club, Iberia Club, Aer Lingus AerClub, Finnair Plus, and Qatar Privilege Club are generally 1:1. Iberia has historically blocked inbound Avios until the account is established. The Chase 30% Avios bonus referred to here ran in the prior month and is over; an Amex 30% British Airways Avios bonus was published in August 2026 and is over. Point values of about 1¢ for a travel-eraser redemption and about 1.7¢–1.85¢ for a strong Capital One partner redemption are planning ranges, not a rate Capital One guarantees. Award prices, carrier surcharges, transfer ratios, and Move Avios rules change. Confirm the ratio on your Capital One transfer screen and the fare, the taxes, and the surcharge in the program that will issue the ticket before you move miles. Transfers are one-way.
